The good cop/bad cop film and TV formula is tried and tested - but throw humour into the equation and it’s an even more arresting sight.
‘The Heat’ (15) stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in a crime comedy which has been feted as “one of the sleeper hits of the summer”.
Uptight FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn (Bullock) and foul-mouthed Boston cop Shannon Mullins (McCarthy) couldn’t be more incompatible. But when they join forces to bring down a ruthless drug baron, they become the last thing anyone expected - friends. ‘The Heat’ is turned up tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday at 7.45pm.
‘From Up on Poppy Hill’ (U) is a Japanese subtitled animated film set in Yokohama in 1963, telling the story of two high school kids whose budding romance is threatened by a buried secret from their past (Saturday and Sunday, 1.30pm).
Sunday and Monday sees ‘Call Girl’ (18), a Scandinavian subtitled drama, screened at 7.45pm. For one night only ‘Frances Ha’ (15), billed as a “modern comic fable”, is screened on Tuesday (7.45pm) with ‘Blackfish’ (15), the harrowing tale of a performing killer whale, on Wednesday and Thursday.
