Borough cross swords with Heart again

Todmorden Borough play Rochdale Sacred Heart in the first round of the Lancashire FA Amateur Shield for the second year running on Saturday.

Borough have ground advantage this time and supporters could be in for a treat if the rematch is similar to 12 months ago. On that occasion John Gilford’s side won 11-10 on penalties after a 3-3 draw, Heart having scored with the last kick of extra time.

Borough are in need of a lift after playing pretty well against decent opposition for the second week running without reward last Saturday.

Tod lost 1-0 at Leyland United in Division Two of the West Lancashire League, going down to a 75th minute goal against the fourth-placed side.

A week earlier they had conceded an even later goal - also the only one of the game - at home to leaders Furness Cavaliers.

Gilford is happy with his side’s defending and the job done by Stevie Barker, Dan Lively, Harry Whitehead and Gaz Lawson last Saturday but he is concerned that his side isn’t creating much.

Chances were few and far between at Leyland.

Borough played down the slight slope in the first half and competed well.

The pressure on them increased after the break and they were eventually undone when they lost possession in their own half and the ball crept into the bottom corner from a hit and hope shot.

The visitors thought Leyland should have been down to 10 men at that stage but the referee didn’t see an incident in which Whitehead hit the deck.
