Hebden Royd United maintained their promising start to the season with a 3-1 success away to Dewsbury Rangers in Division Two of the West Riding Women’s League.

After a draw against Ilkley in their opener, thanks to two goals from Kerry Wheelwright, they have made a bright start considering they are still on the lookout for a goalkeeper.

It wasn’t all plain sailing at Dewsbury, as they went behind in the first minute when a miscued cross sliced over keeper Paula Statham.

Royd settled into their game and soon Bex Payne was their main threat down the right wing.

Wheelwright and Nat Jaskolski went close and with less than a minute to half time Dani Bedford collected the ball on the half way line, knocked the ball past the central defender and hit an unstoppable shot with the outside of her right foot, the ball shaving a post on the way in.

Royd picked up where they left off. A Dewsbury defender’s back pass hit a post and Wheelwright, Payne and Sarah Clegg went close.

Grace Rawnsley bravely cleared off her own line from a rare Dewsbury threat before Royd took the lead from a Bedford corner, Sinead Rice forcing the ball over the line.

Royd were well in control Rice completed victory in the 90th minute after a fine passing move between Bedford and Wheelwright.

Royd have a larger squad this season but no recognised goalkeeper.
