Todmorden will be awash with “red herrings” as part of a competition to raise funds for a group for adults with learning disabilities.

From Friday, October 19, until Friday, November 9, around 20 shops and market stalls situated around Todmorden town centre will be including in their window display something which does not belong there, for example sardines in a chemist’s shop.

Competitors can buy an entry form which names all the shops taking part and then visit each one in turn and try to spot the rogue item. All participating shops and stalls will display the red herring sign.

A spokesperson for Independent Living Todmorden, the group that will benefit from the funds raised, said: “People of all ages can enjoy taking part and, coming at half term, it’s a good way to spend the day having fun and getting some exercise for only £1.

“Local shops get lots of potential customers to view their wares and we raise much needed funds. Everyone’s a winner.”

Entry forms will be on sale from Friday, October 19, at CN Quality Foods, Todmorden Market, Central Hair Design, Water Street and St Mary’s Church.

Once entrants have visited all 20 shops and listed the rogue items, the forms can be returned to the place where they were purchased or to Independent Living Todmorden at the Crypt, St Mary’s Church, Todmorden.

The winner will be drawn at the group’s bring and buy sale at the Crypt on Saturday, November 10, and receive a prize of £20.
