Green-fingered Calder Valley horticulture student Claudia Docker joined dozens of volunteers to plant 3,000 daffodil bulbs in memory of loved ones.
Students from Calderdale College’s horticulture department assisted Marie Curie supporters in planting their annual field of hope at Manor Heath Park, Halifax.
The college students assisted students from Ravenscliffe High Special School and Savile Park Primary School in planting daffodil bulbs of various species to flower in the spring.
Claudia, from Todmorden, hopes to open an allotment of her own and work with people with mental health disabilities. “It was lots of fun helping students plant daffodils,” she said. “The day was inspirational; it feels good to know I am making a difference in the community.”
Calderdale College Horticulture one year Level 1 and Level 2 courses have been running for two years. The course develops learners’ skills as a horticulturist enabling them to work alongside Calderdale Council’s parks and leisure services departments and local environmental organisations.
Philip Johnson, nursery supervisor at Manor Heath Nursery, said: “Everyone got their hands dirty and a good time was had by all.”
Horticulture lecturer at Calderdale College, Poppy Firth, said: “It was a very magical, exhilarating community focused day.”
l On Friday, October 26, Hebden Royd Town Council will be holding a bulb planting day to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, which needs to raise £10,000 every hour, every day to be able to carry out its work.
Hebden Royd Town Council is inviting residents to take part in planting daffodils to help raise vital funds for Marie Curie. People wishing to plant bulbs will be asked to donate £1 per bulb or £5 per 10 bulbs. Coun David Young, chair of the environmental renaissance committee, said: “Although we plant bulbs every year, this year we thought that we would do something different.
“This allows us to raise funds for a great cause as well as enabling the community to be involved in creating a lasting tribute to their loved ones.”
The planting will take place across Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd at the following times; 10am to 11am at the turning circle on King Street, 11.30am to 12.30am at Old Gate, 1.30pm to 2:30pm at Burnley Road (opposite the former clog factory), and 3pm to 4pm at White Lee Rec.
