Last month students and staff at Todmorden High School were joined two special guests: Yorkshire and Humber MEP and former Todmorden resident Rebecca Taylor and Calderdale Councillor Ashley Evans.
The guests visited the school to speak to students about the role of an MEP, the European Parliament and how young people can get involved in politics.
Their visit included speaking to all of Year 10 and 11, followed by a question and answer session, a meeting with the school council to find out about their role and what concerns young people in Todmorden, and lunch with the Year 11 prefects.
In the afternoon, our guests formed part of the judging panel for the final of a Year 12 presentation task.
As part of the SPACE day, the Year 12 students were split into eight teams and given a statement to research and create a presentation based on this.
Students looked at a wide range of topics including whether or not our military forces should be deployed into countries such as Syria, the impact of online retail on the British high street, and the impact of drilling for oil in the arctic, to name just a few.
At the end of the day the two teams that made it through to the final round had researched taxation - whether or not it is right that people who earn more should be taxed more - and the arguments for and against the HS2 high speed rail link.
Both teams gave very well researched and balanced views for their chosen topics and the panel was impressed with their efforts.
The taxation team was the overall winner.
