Cyclists who fancy following in the tracks of Chris Froome and company can do so, thanks to two Calderdale men.

Friends Gareth Ott, of Skircoat Green, and Tony Sheard, of Sowerby Bridge, have produced a range of markers for the route of the Tour de France when the big race arrives in the upper Calder Valley in July.

The tablets, which are being sold at Hebden Bridge Visitor and Canal Centre, are aimed at keen cyclists who would like a memento of their efforts to complete part or all of the route, and spectators who would like a souvenir of their visit.

Gareth, 32, said: “We make them all ourselves. It’s very much a cottage industry at the moment.

“We’ve had orders from a B and B in France and another from Abu Dhabi.

“We’re selling a lot as birthday presents or to people who have completed a stage of the route.”

Trisha Heyworth, senior tourist information assistant, said: “We’ve not had anything like this before so we’ll have to wait and see how they go.

“But they are very attractive and we’re happy to help out anything that’s produced locally like this.

“They complement nicely what we’re selling already.

“We’re expecting to be really busy come the summer and a lot of visitors will want a memento of their visit.

“There’ll be a lot of visitors to the area who will all need feeding and somewhere to stay.”

The Tour de France Grand Depart comes to Calderdale on Sunday, July 6.

More than 150,000 visitors are expected to arrive in Calderdale to watch one of the world’s most famous sporting events.
