Cinema-goers in the upper Calder Valley will have a chance to check out the 2014 Oscar-winning best actor this week.

Matthew McConaughey won the top gong for his role in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ at the Academy Awards earlier this month, and the film arrives at Hebden Bridge Picture House on Friday.

He plays real-life Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, whose free-wheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV positive and given 30 days to live.

His search for alternative treatments helped establish a way in which HIV positive people across the country could access his supplies through his ‘buyers club’.

Together with fellow AIDS patient Rayon, they embarked on a battle with the medical establishment for dignity, education and acceptance.

It will be screened from Friday until Sunday at 7.45pm each day.

Noted indie director Jim Jarmusch directs vampire story ‘Only lovers left alive’ on Monday and Tuesday at 7.45pm.

It tells the story of vampire Adam, who makes a living as a reclusive musician.

And there is still chance to see ‘The Lego Movie’, which will be screened over the weekend.

For more information and screening times, call 01422 842807 or visit www.hebdenbridgepicturehouse.co.uk.
