With the arrival of warmer weather, Calder Food Hub is inviting people to don their wellies and gardening gloves to join in its spring activities.

The Calder Valley based group has planned several courses over the next couple of months to get people out and about in the great outdoors.

It starts on Sunday, March 16, with “Edible mushroom cultivation”.

The course will begin with an introduction to the world of garden mushrooms and the mycelium network from which they errupt.

Mycelium works in symbiotic association with trees and green plants to manage nutrient systems.

Harnessing this can help to enhance a garden’s soils and plants.

The workshop will emphasise a hands-on-approach including a log inoculation with the edible mushroom Shitake and a brief sawdust garden giant inoculation, both of which can be taken home to integrate into a garden.

The course will be delivered by local mushroom growers Beth Morgan and Martin Austin, who run a small scale local business called Rooting and Fruiting.

Upcoming courses include “Back garden chicken keeping” on April 13 and “Making raw food feasts” on May 11.

All one day courses cost £35. Lunch is provided.
