CONTROVERSIAL proposals to develop a windfarm on the hills above Todmorden will be discussed by Todmorden town councillors on Wednesday night (December 12, 7.30pm).
The proposals, by Kelda Water Services, which owns Yorkshire Water, were announced last month, as reported in the Todmorden News and if approved will see five 125m wind turbines placed at land next to Gorpley Reservoir, above Bacup Road.
Kelda says the turbines are part of its aim to have 50 per cent of the energy it uses supplied from renewable sources by 2020, in line with Government targets, and the company says it is also developing other renewable energy projects to generate electricity, such as anaerobic digestion and hydro power.
But residents are campagning against the plans and hope people will join them in objecting to the proposals. They fear their lives will be blighted by flicker effect from blades and noise nuisance, and they also have concerns that moorland wildlife will be affected and the visual appeal of the moor will be blighted. Kelda claims in supporting information for the application that it has addressed these issues.
Todmorden councillors will discuss the application when they meet tonight to discuss planning applications and amenities matters.
The application is available online through Calderdale Council and Rossendale Borough Council websites, and it can be read at Calderdale Council’s offices in Halifax, Rossendale Borough Council’s offices in Rawtenstall and there is an inspection copy lodged at the main library in Todmorden.
Calderdale Council’s planning committee will decide whether to approve or refuse the application.
