Todmorden Golf Club’s quest for success in the Yorkshire Union league begins at Normanton next Tuesday.

Dave Stafford is joined by Rive Rocks newcomers Frank Greaves and Mark Birkett to form a powerful trio to take part in the Yorkshire Division Seven preliminary round event.

Tod have high hopes of make a big impact in scratch golf at local and county level this summer and this represents their first test.

The Tod players are in the last groups out, shortly after fellow Halifax-Huddersfield Union club Crow Nest Park have started their bid.

The leading clubs will go through to the Division Seven event proper at Low Laithes on Wednesday, April 23.

Stafford said he, ex-West End player Greaves and former Halifax member Birkett would be having a practice round at Normanton on Sunday to make sure they were properly prepared.

All the Tod trio have played representative golf for the local Union and Stafford said Birkett had studied the rest of Tuesday’s field and considered a Sand Moor line-up with two Leeds Union players a danger.

“We have a good chance of winning with Sand Moor the biggest threats,” said Stafford.

Calder Valley golfer Adam Cryer picked up £225 for finishing joint fourth in an 1836 Pro Tour event on Monday.

Cryer, attached to Halifax club West End, shot a two-under-par 67 at Ilkley Golf Club.

That score was matched by home club player James Hepworth and bettered by joint winners Liam O’Neill (Cookridge Hall) and Danny Wilkes (Headingley)with 65s.

Bedlington’s Matthew Webb shot 66 for third.

Cryer had 14 pars and birdies on six, 15 and 16, dropping his only shot on the 17th.

Todmorden GC have invited anyone who may be interested in joining the club to visit Rive Rocks tomorrow (6.0).

Membership offers will be available and the club’s PGA professional Mark McEvoy will make a presentation, covering all aspects of golf.
