New allotments have been officially opened in Hebden Bridge after four years of planning.

Most of the 41 plots have already been snapped up, with the land also being used to house a community orchard and a garden.

The project has cost £17,000 using from Northern Gas Networks and Hebden Royd Town Council.

Emma Green, the council’s neighbourhood manager, said: “There are 41 individual plots. Most of them have already been taken up and we’re working through a waiting list for the others.

“There are also spaces for people to plant fruit trees, a community orchard and woodland planting.

“The reaction has been really positive. A lot of people in the community have got together and are out supporting each other, especially those who don’t know too much about gardening.

“One of the main things is that some people in Hebden Bridge don’t have an outdoor space or an opportunity to grow their own vegetables.”
