Walsden C & FC are searching for a new home venue with their Rochdale Online Alliance season already under way.
More flood alleviation work at Centre Vale Park means the pitches there will be out of use and Todmorden Sports Club have been allowed additional use of Walsden Rec, which is just across the road from the cricket club.
Walsden C & FC secretary Kenny Gale was aware that his side might not be able to play at the Rec but frustrated by Calderdale Council’s late decision and that he only found out via a letter to the Rochdale Alliance secretary.
He said he had “one or two irons in the fire” but with Walsden Rec the only Calderdale Council-owned pitch in the area the team might have to play at Firgrove, Rochdale.
The Walsden side was set up last season and placed in the top section. The team, which is managed by Danny Howley, finished in a creditable mid-table position.
Walsden started their 2014-2015 campaign with a 2-0 defeat away to Rochdale Asia and were then given a couple of Saturdays off while several of their players completed cricket commitments.
Howley’s side play Rochdale Secred Heart at Firgrove this Saturday but will then need a home ground.
Gale accepts that Sports, as a longer-standing club, should have first call on local facilities. However, he believes a decision should have been made earlier and said junior matches didn’t normally take place on a Saturday afternoon.
“I’m a bit annoyed I have found out through our league,” he said.
“It is now the middle of September and we don’t know what to do.”
One of the reasons the cricket club branched out into football was to make use of their Scott Street base throughout the winter and they have renovated changing facilities at the club with those on the Rec not fit for use.
