ASDA’S bid to develop the Halifax Road, Todmorden, site as a superstore has been rejected by the Planning Inspector.
In October, Planning Inspector Mel Middleton heard evidence for four days at Todmorden Town Hall following Asda’s decision to appeal Calderdale Council’s refusal of planning permission for a new supermarket on the site.
Last night it was confirmed that the inspector had rejected the appeal on grounds that it would have a “significant adverse impact on the vitality and viability of Todmorden town centre.”
Asda already has permission to develop a supermarket on the Abraham Ormerod and Olympia cinema sites but its preferred option was the Halifax Road site, now putting the situation in limbo.
