A pregnant woman had a lucky escape after falling down a six-feet deep hole in Hebden Bridge.

The incident, which is believed to have been caused by a paving stone giving way, happened on a private pavement on Hope Street at around 7.30pm last Thursday.

Firefighters from Todmorden and Elland, as well as the Technical Rescue Unit from Cleckheaton, were called to rescue the woman, who is believed to have only received minor injuries.

Todmorden Station watch manager Carl Fielden said: “The stone had given way on one side and held its position on the other side, and had swung down. It was held in a pivot position

“The lady was lucky in some ways. If the stone had come down and fallen on to her it would be a completely different situation.

“The fact that the stone was held in place saved her life.”

After securing the stone the firefighters, who had been called by Yorkshire Ambulance Service, sent a ladder down the hole.

A paramedic went down to assess the woman’s condition, before escorting her up the ladder to freedom.

She was taken to hospital as a precaution.

In total, the rescue took around 30 minutes.
