Hebden Royd Mayor Jonathon Timbers tried his hand at the sport on a special day for White Rose Archers.

The club held a Windsor Tournament alongside an opening ceremony for improvements at their Salem Sports Fields home on Sunday.

For the last 18 months West Yorkshire Probation Service, using its Community Pay Back Teams, has worked at the site off Spring Grove, Hebden Bridge.

They had been asked by White Rose Archers, who jointly own the sports field with Hebden Bridge CC, to make the archery target range more accessible to people with mobility difficulties.

The workers laid an all-weather access path suitable for wheelchairs, followed by a slabbed area to site chairs. They then levelled out a sloped waiting area and added a row of benches.

Other work included replacing 60 fence posts, rebuilding a boundary wall and tidying a rubble strewn area, bringing it back into use.

Timbers opened the improved area on Sunday by cutting a ribbon. He then blew a whistle to start the shooting.

He was presented with a 70th anniversary White Rose Archers commemorative mug and spoon by club president Ian Wright. The Mayor then tried his hand at archery along with his family.
