Harvest at St Michael’s Church Mytholmroyd had a distinctly African feel to it this year.

On Saturday, September 20, Pam Rowlinson organised a Nigerian Evening in aid of church funds.

Attendees dressed in Nigerian clothes, danced to its music and enjoyed its fabulous food and more than £400 profit was raised.

Then on Sunday the African theme was continued with a Harvest service inspired by prayers from the Kenyan and Masai churches, said the Rev Cathy Reardon, vicar of Erringden Benefice.

The Harvest food that was collected was given to the Halifax Food Bank and Rev Reardon thanked all that contributed to a great weekend.

Organiser Pam said guests came up from London to help her make the event a special one and make it as lively as possible, with colourful clothes and music in abundance.

Among the guests was the Mayor of Hebden Royd, Coun Jonathan Timbers.

“It was a good night and everyone enjoyed it - they want it again. I gave a presentation about the history and culture of Nigeria and there were a lot of artefacts for people to have a look at.

“There is a young wives group at the church and I’m hoping to do something similar for them next spring,” she said.
