Firefighters - don’t you just love them?
They’re a reassuring presence at numerous incidents across the Calder Valley but are also known as great sports and all-round good guys.
Which is why we’re delighted that the retained firefighters from Mytholmroyd are supporting the White Ribbon Campaign, whose national HQ in New Road is just a stone’s throw from the station.
The crew, led by their commander Dave Manning, has welcomed the opportunity to highlight the work of the campaign and never to condone or remain silent about violence against women.
You may see crew members sporting the distinctive White Ribbon lapel badge. And some may even join a growing number of men already signed up for the annual “Heels Walk”, which this year takes place on Saturday, November 24 (11am).
White Ribbon founder Chris Green said: “These Heels are Made for Walking will be returning to the streets of Hebden Bridge and timed to be part of a calendar of events around the country to support the UN’s End Violence Against Women Day on Sunday, November 25.
“A regular feature for Hebden, the event provides an opportunity for the local community to publically affirm their commitment to ending violence against women, supporting the work of the campaign. They do this in the best way possible, by tottering their way from the White Swan in women’s high heels, literally walking a mile in their shoes.”
The campaign is in need of women’s shoes (size eight and over) for the men to wear - pairs can be dropped off at Hebden Bridge Post Office or at the White Ribbon offices. You can take part by emailing info@whiteribboncampaign.com
