Head to Head art tribute to David

The new exhibition, “Head to Head”, featuring work by Martin Bates and Geoff Brindle is a genuine tribute to David Wright, the initiator, and prime mover behind the Artsmill project and gallery, Linden Mill, Linden Road, Hebden Bridge.

Geoff and Martin said: “We were both friends, and admirers of David, who gave so much of his time and energy in promoting the arts locally. We were both shocked by David’s untimely death, and we hope that this show would please him.”

Geoff, based in Barrowford, Pendle, is showing much of this work for the first time. His work is surrealist in nature, based upon complex psychological references, but he uses colour in an emotive and dramatic manner, to increase the depth of the poetic experience.

Martin Bates studied art and design in the 60’s and has continued to create work that shows a fascination for the composition of the essentials: shape, colour, texture, consequently his work has been mainly abstract. In this respect it has an analogy with musical arrangements – that is ordering of pattern, rhythm, repetition and counterpoint for their own sake along with a balanced spread of colours.

The show begins on October 8, and runs Wednesday till Sunday (closed on a Monday and Tuesday) until the end of the month.
