The White Ribbon Campaign has a new project providing support for budding songwriters. Yorkshire’s top songwriting duo Michelle Plum and Nick Hall will be leading songwriting workshops at St Michael’s Church Hall, Mytholmroyd, in the New Year as part of the White Ribbon Campaign music project.

The aim will be to create songs that fit the philosophy of challenging violence to women - and those taking part will also get a opportunity to perform their brand new songs - alongside Michelle and Nick, who as Plumhall received the Yorkshire Gig Guide’s Outstanding Songwriting Award this summer. It is hoped that this will be the first stage in creating a White Ribbon themed album, with a festival in the pipeline.

Dave Boardman, of Doddnaze Artists, is managing the project and said, “Michelle and Nick are indeed outstanding songwriters. Their debut album Thundercloud has received fantastic reviews across Yorkshire and in the national music press. They’ve played folk clubs, have supported The Wonderstuff and Peter Tork of the Monkees and will shortly be supporting The South at several northern gigs. Michelle was a member of Chumbawamba and Nick brings his experience of folk rock with The Hall Brothers and classic rock with Magna Carta, so they cover a wide range of genres.”

The workshops are free and available to anyone based in Hebden Royd. “We’re very grateful to Hebden Royd Town Council who have provided a grant towards organising the event,” added Dave. The event is not restricted by age either. Dave has worked on such projects in the past including a songwriting workshop at Calder High School that led to several school students appearing at the Trades Club.

It will be ideal for anyone who has some musical or lyric writing interest. Participants can work individually or in small groups, and lyric writers can be teamed up with musicians. “If that worked for Bernie Taupin and Elton John it can work for others,” Dave said.
