Blood, sweat and cheers as Bridge show is a hit

Rousing successes for George Standring and Steffan Baxter were highlights for Hebden Bridge Boxing Club at their first show of the season.

Most of those in a 300-strong crowd roared the pair to majority decisions in last Friday’s event at Mytholmroyd Community Centre.

The 12-bout show, which featured home club boxers in most of the fights, went on until around 11.30pm.

Standring, 14, registered his 11th win on the bounce and 14th in 17 fights overall.

He was pushed all the way by Barnsley Star’s Will Harty in the 63kg contest but Hebden Bridge club chief Clayton Varey thought his boxer had won all three rounds.

Baxter, a senior, just got the better of Skirton ABC’s Sean Coxon at 75kg. He picked up the fighter of the night award for his efforts in what was an all-action contest from the first bell.

Bridge boxers didn’t have things their own way, however, with several reversals, including a split-decision defeat for heavyweight Joe Kidder.

He lost a bloody battle to Halifax Star’s Josh Sandlands, who scaled 8.5 kilos heavier.

A clash of heads in the second round left both fighters the worse for wear, Kidder emerging with a cut and swelling over an eye and Sandlands with a gash on the top of his head.

Varey said it had been a successful evening and the money raised would help pay some of the club’s bills during the season.

“A couple more results could have gone our way but that happens,” he said. “The atmosphere while Steffan and George fought was brilliant.”

The club plans to host a second show in the New Year.
