Development work at Old Gate in Hebden Bridge is due to continue until the end of April 2015.

Road closures have been in place since the work started, and will continue until it is completed. However, the closures will be limited to one or two mornings per week when required, and will not be in place over the festive period. Parking will be available at all times.

The previous road closures associated with this work were in place from 8am to 4.30pm on weekdays. The new arrangements will come into place on Monday, January 5, 2015.

Calderdale Council’s Head of Planning and Highways, Geoff Willerton, said: “As the road is narrow and large vehicles are regularly accessing the construction site, the closure is essential to ensure the work can take place safely.

“We want the private developer to be able to continue their work, but we also want to keep disruption to a minimum. Council officers will keep visiting the site to check progress and are working with the developer to encourage completion as quickly as possible.”

The alternative route for drivers is West End, Bridge Gate, then St George’s Street.

Once the work is completed there will be new apartments and business units at Old Gate.

Old Gate has been closed during mid-week business hours since August due to renovation work which has begun on the site of the former Hebden Cord Company mill which is to be converted into two office/retail units and six residential apartments.

The road has been closed Monday-Friday, from 8am to 6pm.

At the time Calder ward Coun Janet Battye said the closure caused real inconvenience to local businesses, residents and visitors, taking out a dozen parking spaces. It was also a crucial access to the town centre, Town Hall and the market, she said.

She had asked that road closure only took place when work was taking place.

And nearby West End’s Menagerie Pets and Gardens owner, Elaine Roberts, said she had not been consulted as to see how her livelihood would be affected.
