Let us hope that the New Year will bring more social justice and less need for food banks.
People locally and nationally have been hard hit and scapegoated for the poor social and economic policies of government.
I refer to issues such as sanctions to benefits by Job Centres, for example for missing appointments, rising rents and poor housing policy (for example, the denial of housing benefit to young people, many of whom are care-leavers) and asset-stripping by shareholders of viable businesses.
All lead to financial hardship for people who are already struggling.
We now have the most unequal distribution of wealth in Europe (see “Inequality and the 1%” by Danny Dorling).
So much for the “trickle down” effect!
This will lead to further social breakdown if the pie is not cut more equally soon.
