Calder Valley Organic Gardeners will host their annual Potato Day at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Royal Fold, New Road, Mytholmroyd, on Saturday, February 28, between 10am to 3pm.
Admission of £1 includes entry to the Potato Raffle, and 30 varieties of potato (organic and non-organic) will be on sale at 14 pence per tuber.
Alan Romans, the potato expert’s, updated fifth edition of ‘A Guide to Seed Potato Varieties’ will also be on sale.
On the day, there will be children’s activities, information displays, an organic cheese stall, compost and plant stalls, a jam stall, onion sets and shallots along with other stalls.
Food and drink will be available at the cafe.
A spokesperson for CVOG said: “Among the varieties on offer is a new first early variety Casablanca, which produces a tasty crop of attractive, smooth white tubers that are perfect for boiling, with the larger tubers making excellent chips.
“It is set to become a firm favourite on the show bench and in the kitchen.
“Second early Roseval, a French potato bred in 1950 is a very attractive, classic, dark red salad potato with yellow flesh. Cooking quality and flavour are excellent. Popular in France, rare in the UK.
“Early maincrop Harlequin is a new cross between Pink Fir Apple and Charlotte.
“It’s a waxy salad potato but not as waxy as pink fir. It’s also less knobbly with superb flavour.
“Maincrop Maxine produce beautiful round tubers with red skins and waxy white flesh. A heavy cropping maincrop variety and good all-round cooker make it one of the better potatoes available today.
“It has earned the RHS award of garden merit.”
