The Calder Gallery in Hebden Bridge was delighted to play host to John S. Prescott during the opening weekend of his latest exhibition.
It was a wonderful opportunity for John’s many fans to meet this modest and unassuming man himself and for John to get the praise directly from them. His intricately figured wooden structures and boxes have been wowing people visiting The Calder Gallery for almost ten years and this exhibition showcases many works not previously seen before as well as numerous completely new pieces.
John’s work has been the focus of keen interest by everyone who sees it. His interest in marquetry started when he was fourteen, and much of his spare time was spent in the development and creation of his fabulous objects while he was still in full time work and since retiring it has been a full time occupation. This exhibition includes pictures, spinning wheels, clocks, bowls, three dimensional scenes, and of course his fabulous boxes with which most of the gallery’s customers will already be familiar.
His work is often illuminated by a dry humour and he is truly an artist with a surreal outlook. Gallery owners Sue Allinson and Phil Withersby have never seen any other work that displays such high levels of skill combined with such imagination. They are John’s most passionate admirers and feel enormously privileged to be the only place to show is wonderful creations.
