Incredible Edible Todmorden: Down on the farm

It’s all happening at Incredible Farm in Walsden - geese laying, cows mooing, salad growing and children learning.

Whatever the season, there’s lots to do. Mike, our head grower, has been getting everything ready for the longer days, and we have two huge polytunnels bursting with spicy salad leaves for harvest and delivery to the Bear and Valley Organics.

Over winter we have been building a new compost toilet, which is now open for donations and a new walkway across the crocodile infested swamp. The toilet is wheelchair accessible and the walkway completes a wheelchair (and wheelbarrow) circuit of the site. The two jersey girl cows are lovely and getting fat, enjoying sunny days, grazing the field on a long tether amongst the dog walkers . It’s nearly their first birthday, and we’re having a farm cafe and cow birthday party for them on Saturday, April 11, 11am-2pm, all welcome!

We are looking to recruit our third apprentice, so if you know any likely persons, please send them along pdq!

Our work with youth clubs and schools continues to gather momentum and we plan to run residential courses for young people at our beautiful hilltop site at Lumbutts over the summer for junior farmers and youth clubs. Or come and join the Incredible Farm team to help plant fruit trees/bushes and create habitat improvement in our young woodland near Lumbutts between 11am and 2pm on March 22. Hot soup and tea provided, warm clothing and boots are advised.

The Lumbutts site is located 200 metres south up the lane from Lumbutts Methodist Church OL14 6JA Children must be accompanied by an adult. Incredible Farm is open to anyone to volunteer or just visit, open weekdays Tuesday to Friday 9am-4pm. Junior farmers too, see Facebook or contact Suzanne, our manager on 07724885611.
