Calderdale Green Party held a People’s Ballot at its information stall at Todmorden Market on April 11 to find out if people want taxes to be spent on public services rather than weapons and war - which the party estimates costs around £37bn a year in the UK.

Jenny Shepherd, Green Parliamentary candidate for the Calder Valley, said: “Our public services are being relentlessly cut back, but the government has gone on spending more on weapons and war than almost every other country. We asked people at our information stall if this is such a good idea. They said that they’d rather spend less on the military budget - and more on the NHS, fair welfare benefits, proper social care, education, reducing use of fossil fuels and sustainable jobs particularly for young people, social housing, local food growing and renationalising public transport.”
