There will be a concert of choral music in Heptonstall Parish Church on Friday, May 15, performed by the local vocal octet Cantorelli. The programme features choral music from Italy.
Cantorelli was formed by a group of friends in Hebden Bridge over 20 years ago and although some members have moved away and new members have joined, the group has always remained a small a capella chamber choir of eight singers.
The group has performed in Heptonstall annually and more recently regularly in Honley, Huddersfield, where they will also be performing this programme on Friday June 19.
Choral music from Italy has always been popular within the group especially music from the 16th and 17th Centuries when Italy was at the forefront of the development of new musical forms both in church music and in secular song writing and particularly in the music of Claudio Monteverdi. This programme features both sacred and secular music by Monteverdi including a madrigal from his Madrigals Book I of 1594 and two madrigals from Madrigals Book IV of 1603. A sacred motet, In Monte Olivetti, from the Tenebrae by Monteverdi’s contemporary, Carlo Gesualdo, nobleman, lutenist, composer and infamous murderer features in the programme which also includes motets by later Italian composers Antonio Lotti, Scarlatti and Rossini.
Admission is £8 (concessions £6) at the door from 7.30pm. No advance booking is required. The concert starts at 8pm. Details of the programme and more information is available on the website www.cantorelli.co.uk.
