Gary Earle extended his lead at the top of the Mount Skip winter league on Sunday when the action resumed after a week off due to snow.
Earle and Dave Fisher beat Keith Law and Richard Allott 4 & 3 while last year’s winner Jonny Cockroft slipped further behind when he and Brian Coukham lost two down to Andy Hutchinson and Paul Elliot.
Play had started in eerie conditions on the moorland course but the swirling fog and drizzle eventually cleared to leave a pleasant but cold winter’s morning.
The three ball consisted of Mick Robertson, Gavin Degnan and Lee Amos, the latter apparently using a Greek scoring system to claim victory despite the muted protests of his opponents!
Chris Hoyle and Gav Brumby halved their match against Charles Bamford and Martyn Astin, despite being three down at one stage against two of Skip’s lowest handicappers.
Yorkshire Girls starlet Neeve Fisher was persuaded to get out of bed for the early start by her dad, vice-captain Dave Fisher.
She partnered Stuart Spencer to an easy win over Noel Russell and Sean Frewin, who according to his partner had a nightmare round.
Winter league action also returned to Todmorden GC’s Rive Rocks this week following the recent interruptions and there was a good turn out.
Damp conditions underfoot and a strengthening wind made the course play very long.
The star turn was Peter Borders, who scored 37 points to take the individual prize and assist his partners Mark Harper and Alan Payne to the team prize by some margin.
Mark Pattison continues to lead the field but Harper moved closer to the top spot and seven points separates the top four.
A good number of golfers took advantage of Saturday’s sunshine and although there wasn’t an official competition, Alan Dickenson had a hole in one.
Winter league standings: 1, M Pattison 209 pts; 2, M Harper 205 pts; 3, S Hemmington 204 pts; 4, W Duckworth 202 pts; 5, M Saxon 195 pts; 6, R Waring 195 pts; 7, B Simpson 195 pts.
