A Todmorden netball team is holding a fundraiser for their team and also to help a children’s charity later this month.
Todmorden Rockets - collectively Joanne Shine, Kelly Owen, Tracey Geoghegan, Ruth Griffiths, Megan Norman, Ami Fisher, Fiona Hyslop, Emma Bonney, Samm Barlow and Gabby Masters - are a team who currently play in the division two of the Halifax League.
The event, including a Boys v Girls netball match, takes place at the Hare and Hounds Burnley Road, Todmorden, on June 20.
Joanne explained: “The season is coming to an end and a second place finish looks very likely.
“Not bad for a team who was set up roughly a year ago.
“The girls work incredibly hard and that shows on and off the court.
“As netball is not a sport that is often spoken about keeping the team going can prove difficult at times hence the fundraiser.
“So the girls have been amazed when it comes to gaining donations for raffles various businesses all.
“All over Todmorden and Halifax they have chipped in with raffle prizes, including Bailey’s Gym, The Queen Hotel, Valley Hair and Beauty, who have donated fantastic prizes, as well as Yorkshire Jets’ netball team.”
Joanne explained that the girls also decided a local charity should benefit too and the one they have chosen is the Together for Looked After Children (TLC) charity.
The Halifax-based charity (more info at www.tlccharity.co.uk ) helps improve opportunities and outcomes for looked-after children in Calderdale. The funds it raises go towards projects developed in partnership with the local authority, schools and carers.
TLC’s challenge is to identify needs and aspirations among looked-after children and care leavers which would not find funding without its support.
Joanne said: “It is really worthy of support. Everyone is welcome on the day, and men can sign up for the match via the Hare and Hounds or by contacting myself or Kelly Owen on Facebook.
“Another way to help would be to give our Facebook page ‘a like’ rockets netball team and follow up to date news.
“We have also set up a gofundme account for any one wishing to donate but can’t make the day itself, with all money raised in this site going directly to the TLC charity.
“This link is again on Facebook or you can search rockets fundraisers/ TLC charity on Gofundme .
“Raffle tickets are also available now priced at £1 a strip from the above people,” said Joanne.
