POLICE, fire crews and a British Waterways team spent nearly four hours recovering a car from the Rochdale Canal in Walsden this morning, Thursday.

The specialist underwater support unit was also called to the scene at the bridge on Hollins Road after the silver Citroen Xsara was spotted in the canal by a member of the public at 6.15am.

There was nobody inside the vehicle.

The teams joined forced to pull the car from the water using a winch and a mini-digger.

Suzanne Oulton, of nearby Henshaw Road, stopped to watch the rescue on her way back from the school run.

She said: “I just saw the car in the water, fully submerged.

“All I could see was the silver roof.

“It was right in the middle of the canal.”

Police closed a section of Hollins Road while the recovery operation took place.
