The Union Four Ball Betterball competition at West End Golf Club is proving popular for Outlane GC, who have now won the tournament three times in five years.
Outlane’s winning duo of Andrew Fearnley and Paul O’Hara could even afford a seven on the last hole to clinch a two-shot victory with their 61 nett score from Willow Valley’s Daniel Waddington and Adam Turner, and the Bradley Park pairing of S Clegg and B Wison, who both had a 63 score.
Dewsbury took fourth place with brothers Jason and Mark Weston registering 64.
The West End course was in superb condition for the 144 competitors who started out at 7.30 in the morning and a big vote of thanks must go to the officials, who kept the players informed of their scores and positions for a later presentation as a near-12-hour day was reached following the last players’ finishing time.
Meanwhile, the combination of the Outlane August Medal and Chapman Trophy was played in ideal conditions, and the first named competition was won by Kevin Pendlebury in the first division with 41 points. He also took the Chapman Trophy, which is a competition for the over-50s run in conjunction with the medal. Runner-up was Martyn Jones, who matched the winner’s 41 points but lost out on the count back. Paul Thomas, on 40 points, was one better than Ian Greenwood.
The Second Division was won by junior player Joe Hainsworth with 39 points. He too had a better count-back score than Dennis Pearcey with Peter Boakes also having a better back score than Mark Bulmer to register their 38 points.
August Medal Division 1: Kevin Pendlebury 41 pts (better back 9) also Chapman Trophy winner; Martyn Jones 41 pts; Paul Thomas 40 pts; Ian Greenwood 39pts. Division 2: Joe Hainsworth 39 pts (better back 9); Dennis Pearcey 39 pts; Peter Boakes 38 pts (better back 9); Mark Bulmer 38 pts.
Meanwhile, Todmorden Golf Club’s Terry Makin took the honours in Division One of the August medal with a nett score of 66.
Playing in the afternoon in the traditional more difficult conditions proved to be no hardship to the experience of Makin.
Andy Hartley – in a rare outing on a Saturday – came second one shot back with a nett 67, leaving Gareth Jones in third with a nett 69.
Trevor Hemmington rolled back the years to take the Division Two medal with a nett 66, beating new member Nick ( DJ Stocks) Stockings into second place two shots back with a nett 68. And Deon Webber was on a shot further back on 69.
Members’ attention now switches to Todmorden GC’s last major of the season played over successive Saturdays –The Presidents Prize which is the last chance for major success.
Gill Neely won the George Seel Trophy at Todmorden Golf Club last Thursday with a two-round score of nett 146, played over two days.
Irena Brown the club vice-captain was runner up on 152 with Joyce Jesson in third after a count back also on 152.
The ladies’ Captain’s prize is next Thursday.
