Some customers who carry organ donor cards have been surprised with a few free goodies at a baker’s stall this month.
When Tony Thomas, of Ham Corner in Todmorden Market Hall, found himself with a spare heart-shaped cake in Valentine’s Day week, a snippet he had heard on the radio gave him the idea of what to do with it.
Throughout Valentine’s Weel the national organ donor register ran a From The Heart campaign in conjunction with ITV television and online features to raise the profile of organ donation registration and how important it is.
Tony’s idea fitted in with the week perfectly as he saw the chance to help promote a good cause, the goodies being a bit like a spot prize.
“The donor scheme was something I had heard mentioned on the radio, so I decided to donate the cake to the first person that came with a donor card,” he said.
Todmorden policeman PC Tony Hanson was the first asked with a donor card and won the cake.
Baker Tony says: “We since given away another one and have a heart-shaped pork pie to give away. We do it on any random day,” he said.
The organ donation scheme says that 147,000 people logged on to register their details during the From The Heart campaign. More details about registering can be found by logging on to www.organdonation.nhs.uk or you can also telephone 0300 123 23 23. Doctors’ surgeries often have information leaflets on the scheme.
