THE launch of the Saturday Food Quarter at Todmorden Outdoor Market has been hailed a resounding success, with calls for shoppers to nominate it for a prestigious award.
At the launch last weekend, visitors enjoyed samples of a variety of food and hundreds of shoppers received free “Love your local market” shopping bags courtesy of Calderdale Council.
Trader Jeff Thomson, of the Curried Away stall, said: “The launch day benefitted from fine weather and attracted many visitors to the market.
“There was a great vibrancy and a great selection of foods on offer, all the ingredients to make a successful local community market.”
The event was part of the “Love your local market” campaign, an initiative which followed the Mary Portas review of town centres to highlight the importance of markets in local communities and economies.
“It gave us the opportunity to showcase the outdoor market and the wide range of fresh produce available,” Jeff said.
The Food Quarter has been announced as a permanent feature of the Saturday outdoor market.
Now shoppers are being urged to nominate Todmorden as the best local market in the BBC Food and Farming Awards 2012.
This can be done via the awards section on the BBC website. Nominations close on August 12.
