CHILDREN are learning through play after their school secured £3,000 of Government match funding to purchase new resources.

Shade Primary School, Todmorden, has bought books and other resources to help with the teaching of phonics - an approach to reading which involves children decoding new written words by sounding them out.

In addition to phonics-based reading books, the school has bought magnetic letters and wall charts.

Headteacher Jan Dawson said: “It’s made sure that we have a variety of resources so that all children can be taught to read as quickly as possible.

“Reading books that are phonics-based helps children to decode words.”

The Government has introduced a phonics assessment which each primary school child has to undergo.

“Hopefully the resources will support the children to achieve the required level and will help them to improve their reading through the school,” Mrs Dawson said.

“The resources are vital, especially for the younger ones. They are learning through play.”
