Many volunteers have signed up for a new food bank in the upper Calder Valley as it prepares to open its doors next month.

The Todmorden Food Drop In has received a lot of public support ahead of the scheduled launch on June 1.

With just two weeks to go until it opens, the team behind the food bank have organised a community challenge to raise funds and collect donations of food items.

Jayne Booth, who is part of food bank team, said: “Our community challenge is simple. In order to ensure the food drop in has food and sustainability we need to raise funds, and acquire non-perishable food.

“We have set ourselves a target of £1,000 and we will be on and around Todmorden Market on Saturday, May 18, collecting money and food from people.

“If anyone wants to make a donation our bank details are: Yorkshire Bank, account name Todmorden Food Drop In, account number 39088464, sort code 05-09-59.

“Please make cheques payable to Todmorden Food Drop In. They can be dropped off at St Mary’s Church, Todmorden, between 11am and 3pm most days.

“Please help us reach our target and support our community.”

Jayne said the food bank will provide vital support for people, especially those affected by the “bedroom tax”.

“Many people will be faced with difficult choices around balancing their weekly budgets,” she said.

“The Todmorden Food Drop In could not have come at a more crucial time, as it will undoubtedly provide a safety net for many.”

She thanked all those who have already given their support.

“We have recruited around 40 volunteers whose enthusiasm and commitment has been inspiring,” she said.

“We have also received support from many other members of the public.”
