Todmorden girl Jess Leyden won two gold medals for Great Britain at the Munich Junior International Regatta at the Olympic rowing venue.

On the first day, she was in her Hudson single scull against 24 European athletes.

After a very fast start, Jess won her heat by six seconds over the 2000m course.

In the A final she powered away from the opposition from the start, winning by 12 seconds with a new personal best of 7:55.4.

It was the first time a British girl had won the single scull.

On the following day, she raced in her single against 22 others in a time trial in which the crews are seeded off past results.

Jess was fastest in her heat. One rival tried to stay with her in the final but by 500m, Jess had broken her and she pushed away from the rest.

She again won by 12 seconds but in a much slower time due to a strong headwind.

Jess, who attends Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School and rows for Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club, recently won silver and bronze for Great Britain at the Australian Youth Olympics.

She will race at the National Schools Regatta later this month and then at Henley Women’s Regatta at senior level.
