FLASH flooding hit Todmorden again early on Sunday evening when water cascading down the hillsides flooded roads in the valley bottom.

Homes and businesses in Rochdale Road and Burnley Road were among those hit as a thunderstorm broke over the town yesterday afternoon and the drains were unable to cope with the amounts of water which was gushing down the road.

Some of the neighbours whose homes were affected have hit out at drivers who made a difficult situation worse, driving through floodwater which they had been able to keep mout of their homes until that point.

Rochdale Road resident Mandy Lord said the attitiude of some drivers was selfish and callous and praised drivers who did stop and the police who controlled traffic until they cleared the drains and the water no longer a threat to their homes, but damage had already been done.

On Burnley Road, Adrian Ashton, who managed to seal his home, said a police Land Rover had stopped and warned vehicles not to go through unless they had to, but then left and the road officially remnained open. He wonders if it would be possible to gove flood wardens the power to close a road when situations like this occurred.

Rail services were also halted when flooding hit the line.
