The Trades Club in Hebden Bridge has started to see a growing number of large names grace its stage.

On Saturday night it hosted one of its most publicised shows. Patti Smith took the stage for a night of acoustic performances and poetry readings.

Patti began the show with a reading of a Sylvia Plath poem, whose grave she visited that day.

She is currently on tour as Patti Smith and her Band, but this was a pared-down show, with just Smith and her bass player, Tony Shanahan, taking on guitar and piano duties for the evening.

The 190 strong audience forgave any mistake she made, such as hitting the wrong chords, or forgetting the timing on some songs. Smith explained that in some instances they had never performed some of the songs acoustic before.

Readings from her 2010 award-winning book, Just Kids, and poems from her own poetry books commanded a silent crowd, followed by wild applause.

The audience went wild with excitement at the opening bars of Smith’s top 5 UK hit, Because the Night, and the show was closed with her anthem People Have the Power.

Many songs were taken from Patti’s latest album, Banga. One such song, This is the Girl, was dedicated to the late Amy Winehouse.

Patti let on that she would return to Hebden Bridge, commenting on the beauty of the town, and the landmarks, saying: “We will be coming back, I promise… I’m just sorry you had to flood for me to come this time!”
