Simon Newbitt earned the highest praise from his skipper after becoming Todmorden’s leading century-maker and helping to make it a weekend of double success.

Left-handed opener Newbitt struck a stunning unbeaten 140 on Sunday as Todmorden beat Haslingden in the Lancashire League to follow up their victory over Rishton on Saturday.

Tod had several bowlers missing and looked up against it when in-form Haslingden, who are in the Worsley Cup final this month, scored 260.

Tod were left facing a revised target in 40 overs and skipper Andrew Sutcliffe said: “We knew that to chase the total down we would need one player in the top four to go large and Simon did just that.”

Newbitt’s 100 came off just 65 balls and Sutcliffe added: “He smashed the bowling to all parts of the ground. His innings was brutal throughout and totally chanceless.

“ We got the reduced total in just 36 overs and it was a great way to make it four wins from four.

“Simon is a quality amateur to have in your side and this was the best amateur match winning knock that I had seen in first team cricket.

“Simon now has seven first team centuries, which is the most in 176 years of Todmorden CC history and he overtakes John Crowther. There are definitely more to come.”

Tod won convincingly at home to Rishton.

The visitors chose to bat on a quality wicket but the home bowlers retained control throughout the innings and took wickets regularly to limit Rishton to 165 for nine from 50 overs. Sri Lankan Geeth Alwis took five wickets and he had good support from Gideon Foster and Paul Senior.

Ben Sutcliffe made a league best 92 not out to steer Tod to victory and 10 points.

On Sunday Todmorden travel to runaway league leaders Accrington. Foster and Oliver Wood are unavailable.
