People will be encouraged to try a vegan diet and lifestyle when a new project is launched in the upper Calder Valley this weekend.

Calderdale Vegan Approach is a two-day course which will provide support and information for people who would like to find out what it is like to be a vegan.

The project is being led by Hilary Wilson, of Incredible Edible Todmorden, and Elizabeth King, of Mytholmroyd, who saw the project being run in Sheffield and decided to bring it to the upper Calder Valley.

People can pledge to go vegan for a month by registering online and then attending a full day of talks, films and cookery demonstrations at the beginning on the month and again at the end.

A vegan buffet will be provided on each of the days, along with a recipe booklet and a goody bag to take home.

The events will take place at Central Methodist Church, Todmorden, on Saturday, September 14, and Saturday, October 19, from 10am until 3pm.

Hilary said: “During the month ‘new’ vegans will be supported by a buddy and regular meets arranged to sample vegan food in local restaurants and cafes.

“We hope to encourage some of our local pubs to offer a choice of vegan food throughout the month.”

But before that, people will have the chance to sign up to take the vegan pledge during an introductory day at Todmorden Market on Saturday, August 10.

“It’s going to be really interesting and informative and, we hope, a lot of fun too,” Hilary said.

Among those to already sign up is Mayor of Todmorden Coun Jayne Booth.
