No aces but a superb 62 wins it for Sumpter

It was Captain’s Day at Hebden Bridge GC on Saturday and the chance to win a car with a hole in one on the par three eighth caused great interest.

There were also cash prizes up for grabs with an ace at the other par threes but despite a large field no one managed to find a hole in one.

The major competition was won by Martin Sunter with a superb nett 62. Jonathon Sutcliffe’s 69 was best gross.

The guest prize was won by Nathan Raynor from West End with a nett 68, whilst Clive Richards won the Past Captain’s prize with a nett 65. Joan Scott had the best lady’s score.

The nearest the pin was won by Raynor and the longest drive by Craig Gee.

Captain Ray Tighe thanked everyone for their support, especially the independent observers for the hole in one.

The day was completed by first class entertainment from Benjamin Kergan, who ensured the celebrations continued well into the night.

There was a Rabbits Donated Prize competition at Todmorden GC on Saturday .

Three-man teams played a Stableford with the best two scores to count and all three to score on the par threes.

The winners were Glen Duckworth, Warren Duckworth and Declan Wade with 80 points from Melvin Link, Jay Link and Chris Redmond with 79 points.

There was only one two, from Paul Snook on the fifth.

On Sunday the Open Stroke winner was David Hollows with a gross 71, 64 nett.

The Silver Rabbits qualifiers were Trevor Hemmington and Bill Simpson with nett 72s.

There were twos for Mark Hamer on the seventh and 14th, Simon Hemmington on the 16th and Darren Shackleton on the 14th.

Ann Dewhurst won the George Seel annual ladies’ event, played over two weekends at Todmorden Golf Club.

Lady Captain Janet Tayor had a marvellous nett 61 on the first day but could not play in the second round.

Ann Dewhurst had a 68 to show the way by five shots from Janet Topham and Alison Barker, who had the only birdie on the day on the fifth.

There was also perfect weather for last Thursday’s second round. Topham and Dewhurst shot 69s and Gill Neely had a 68, including a birdie on the 15th. Barker birdied the 16th. However, Dewhurst was the overall winner with a nett 136.

A Todmorden team came second in the ladies open at North Shore GC, Blackpool.

Alison Barker , Julia White and Irena Brown teamed up[ with the host club’s Lady Captain Liz Coverdale, who has held the same post at Todmorden. They scored 91 points, one fewer than Bondhay GC.
