Walsden will add to their silver collection on Sunday when Chris Dewhirst receives the Central Lancashire League’s championship trophy for the second successive year.

The cup is already back in the possession of the Scott Street side, having been collected at a league meeting last Friday. It will be officially presented after the final match at home to Rochdale.

Stuart Hanson’s seconds have already had their moment of glory, league president Tom Williams doing the honours four days ago after their title success the previous weekend.

Hanson’s side suffered an agonising one-wicket defeat at home to Werneth.

More importantly on Sunday, the firsts won their penultimate match at Milnrow to end any lingering doubts that they might not be worthy champions after the Heywood controversy.

Dewhirst’s men had been confirmed champs when Heywood conceded a league match to Walsden, after a fixture wrangle.

The game at Milnrow was eventually finished by rain with the home side 146 for eight in reply to Walsden’s 235 for six, which included several decent contributions.

Walsden won on a better run rate, having already claimed the bonus point which would have made them champions without the points from the Heywood fixture.

Walsden have one final target for this season - to clinch the aggregate trophy for the club with the most combined first and second team points.
