In confidence with Inspector Dave Browning: Remember, call 101 for speedy contact

In every one of my articles so far there has been a list of how to contact the local police.

Details are on our website and social media outlets and my team regularly distribute leaflets with the information on.

Despite our best efforts, survey results still show that we’re not getting the message across well enough, so the list is included again in this article.

Most people will know to ring 999 for emergencies, but what about the 101 number?

Introduced a relatively short time ago it is intended for non-emergency use if you want the police. Here’s the system. When you ring 101 in West Yorkshire you will speak to someone in West Yorkshire, who can put your call in the right direction.

If you know who you need to speak to, the call taker will send a message to that person. If you don’t know who you need to speak to, the call taker will help you and put you in touch with the right person.

You can, of course, speak to us when we’re out and about, or call in at one of our regular surgeries, which are all advertised on the website.

So what?

The trusted relationships we have with local people can help us in our aim to be a world class police service, but we shall only manage it if we are accessible to the public and they know how to get in touch with us.

Now what?

I am determined to keep building on the current position. We’ll carry on being available to speak to local people and putting effort in to let people know how to contact us.

With good two way communications in place, we’ll keep crime levels down and have criminals on the back foot, where they belong.

Well that’s it for my articles in 2013.

I hope that you all have a great festive season and a happy, healthy 2014.

Why not take a look at the Upper Valley NPT facebook site and you can see some of the work we’re doing that is making a difference in this area?
