Romance and renovation were in the air as schools, a church and a charity held events around Valentine’s Day.

Age UK Todmorden held a Valentine’s coffee morning at Todmorden Town Hall.

Sales of home-made produce at the event, including heart-shaped biscuits and cakes, raised £160 for the charity.

Catherine Rosborough, of Age UK Todmorden, said: “It was a really nice event. Our volunteers worked really hard.

“We had a good turnout despite the bad weather and the produce looked lovely - there were lots of red and white coloured things to tie in with Valentine’s Day.

“People went to lots of effort, including our volunteer Richard White, who donned a sandwich board in the street to help attract people inside.

“I’d like to thank all the volunteers and everyone who attended the event.”

Children in the nursery and reception class at Luddenden CE School baked heart-shaped biscuits for Valentine’s day.

Administrator Val Cartwright said: “They had a great time making them and I’m sure somebody very lucky received them.”

Class three at St Joseph’s Primary School, Todmorden, held a Valentine’s Day assembly at which they told the rest of the school the story of St Valentine.

Class two made chocolate hearts to take home as presents and the whole school was invited to a disco on Friday night.

Teacher Catherine Ogden said: “A good time was had by all.”

And there was a warm welcome for all those attending the community open day at Hope Baptist Church, Hebden Bridge.

Members of the church community invited people to come and have a look around the newly refurbished facilities and see the wide range of activities it hosts.

Project manager Gerard Liston said: “There were two reasons why we held the event.

“Firstly, to show people the space. People who had seen the scaffolding wondered what was going on inside.

“Secondly, to give people the opportunity to think about what they might use the space for and see what our plans are.

“We did have a few people asking about using the space for different purposes.

“It also gave them a chance to see it being used. Brownies were making biscuits and Calder Valley Voices were singing at the front. That was really great.

“We were pleased with how many people turned up, particularly given the weather. People were genuinely curious.

“We are trying to complement community space in the town, not compete with them.

“There are lots of places in Hebden Bridge that people can book and hold events.

“We have a space that has a somewhat unique quality so we feel that the most likely use of the place is for things that promote spiritual and emotional well-being.”
