JOE Rez - who is consort to this year’s Mayor of Todmorden, Coun Abid Hussain - is the new councillor for Todmorden Town Council’s Central ward.
Electors faced a straight choice between Lib Dem Joe Rez and former BPP party candidate for Todmorden, David Jones, who was standing as an independent.
The result was:
Joe Rez (Liberal Democrat) 361
David Jones (Independent) 127
Lib Dem majority 234
The Liberal Democrats gained the seat from Labour, who did not stand a candidate in the by-election and the result leaves the Liberal Democrats with exactly half the council, nine out of 18.
Coun Rez, a councillor for 12 years prior to 2011, said he was delighted to be back on the council and to have ensured what he described as the “crushing defeat” of Mr Jones, who was until recently a leading light in the far right BPP.
“I am very pleased that the electors in Central ward have made such a decisive decision. I will be working very hard for the ward over the next two and a half years until the next Town Council elections,” he said.
