There’s no doubt in my mind that Sean Dyche’s three pre-international break loan signings will strengthen the team.
Perhaps the key one came last - news of the signing of young Manchester United defender Michael Keane, just days after Clarets had held United’s senior players, including record £59m signing Angel Di Maria, to a draw.
Midfield strength was needed and Nathaniel Chalobah, from Chelsea’s junior ranks but with good Championship experience, and George Boyd, a £3 million deal from Hull, should widen options.
Boyd will add extra creativity, Chalobah solidity.
All three players are versatile, and the manager has chosen his squad wisely all summer in that respect.
One point from the first nine was what I expected before the season began. although I thought it might come away at Swansea.
As it was, the Clarets were very solid against United and came closest to breaking the deadlock when David Jones’s free kick struck the woodwork. Tom Heaton’s stop from Robin Van Persie was also key.
After the break, there’s no doubt the real work begins.
