As well as raising a goodly sum towards Mayoral charities, the Mayor and Mayoress of Todmorden’s coffee morning also saw the return of a familiar face.
Held at Todmorden Town Hall, it raised almost £300 to go towards Coun Michael Gill’s chosen charities for the year, Independent Nightlife and Todmorden’s Hippodrome Theatre.
The morning marked the return of a familiar face to town life - that of Britain’s second world war leader and Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.
Coun Gill said: “Winston Churchill’s bust now resides in the Mayor’s Parlour after being kindly donated to the town by Lis Kobus.
“Winston used to be sat on the shelf in the Conservative Club, but when it was closing down, everything was being removed. Lis was on the committee and was given the bust for safe keeping or to auction off for charity.
“However, Lis felt it should have a final resting place where the people of Todmorden would still have the opportunity to see it,” he said. It is believed to have been sculpted by former Todmorden News editor-turned-sculptor Sam Tonkiss.
Meanwhile tickets for two upcoming shows at the Hippodrome for the Mayor’s charity, featuring Alan Godfrey and Bernard Wrigley, are selling fast and Coun Gill reccommends snapping up any remaining while they are still available.
