A GROUP of students have been taking part in a Heritage Lottery Funded Young Roots project which is about to come to an exciting end.
Todmorden High School successfully secured the lottery funding which has allowed the students to learn about the town’s history, gain new skills and ultimately develop a mobile public exhibition for the Todmorden community to enjoy.
The ten students, now in year ten, have been working hard on the project since July 2011.
David Pugh, social history curator and Todmorden resident, has been guiding the students throughout the process with the support and involvement of local historians, museum professionals, film-makers and residents of the town.
“The students have worked incredibly hard,” David said.
“They have done particularly well in leading on the development of the project, which is a core aim of the Young Roots fund.
“They have shown commitment and enthusiasm and have really enjoyed the experience.”
The exhibition, which will be open to the public on Saturday, December 8, at Todmorden Town Hall, will give an interesting insight into the heritage of Todmorden.
It will include features on education, entertainment, transport, leisure and employment.
The exhibition also includes a film made by the students incorporating elements of archive footage, stop frame animation and interviews with local people.
Each primary school in Todmorden will be given their own educational resource box, funded by the project, containing a range of materials designed to support the teaching of Todmorden’s history and heritage.
As part of the project, the students are all working towards their Silver Arts Award, which is the equivalent of a grade B at GCSE.
