Two major winter exhibitions of art are going on show in the Calder Valley.
Water Street gallery, Todmorden’s, Winter Exhibitions marks a distinctive turning point in Water Street Gallery, in the opening of a new viewing space. much needed to show yet more fine works of established and emerging artists.
Co-owner Rosemary Holcroft said: “Our vision was to create a quiet contemplative area, where the art works take centre stage.”
Now on show, this season’s ‘Small Works’ exhibition forms a really exciting selection, creating a dynamic and wide ranging exhibition.
New to the gallery, artist Laura Garcia-Martin talks of her painting “the darker side of different social environments.” Arguably reflecting her cultural heritage of Goya, she is now an MA graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University.
Northern artists Louise Lockhart, Emma Wilkinson and Ian Taylor who show regularly in the gallery are all exhibiting fine 3D assemblage works, and jewellery.
Rosemary said: “This season we have added even more makers to our craft gallery with glass, ceramics, jewellery, metalwork and woodturning, cards, bags and purses are just some of the hundreds of distinctive crafts and gifts in both affordable and collectable ranges.We also offer gift vouchers.”
The Winter Exhibition runs seven days a week through Christmas to January 31.
In Hebden Bridge, the David Wright Gallery at Artsmill, Linden Road, is home to an eclectic mix of stunning art work of the annual Arts Fair.
The work ranges from the subtle and exquisite painting of Joseph O’Reilly to the colourful playful characters of Louis Benoit. Barry Midgley provides intriguing sculpture while Sarah McDade totems and pots in clay. There are the fun loving automata of Lisa Slater’s donkey and delicate cut outs of Phillippa Drylaga.
Don Myers provides a painted peek through house passages to the moors beyond Hebden.
A spokesperson said: “This is an exhibition that has painting, sculpture, pots and loads of presence and could even provide that special Christmas present but well worth a peruse for pleasure anyway.”
